Site Description
Big Spring International Park

To the right of the bank is the beginning of Big Spring Park. At the base of the bluff, is the limestone spring where the town started. Pioneer John Hunt occupied a log cabin there in 1805 and was the first inhabitant of what would become Huntsville.
The water from here was pumped up the hill to the reservoir to form the city waterworks. And at the base of the spring is the beginning of the Indian River Canal that carried canal boats loaded with cotton bails to the Tennessee River, and from there all the way to New Orleans.
