Cox House, ca. 1825
Cox House, ca. 1825

Huntsville architect George Steele designed this home in 1825 for Joshua Cox.
Directly behind it, up on Echols Hill, is the home of LeRoy Pope. Pope boasted that from his home he had the best view of all of Huntsville. Legend says that Joshua Cox built his home with extra high ceilings, fourteen feet on the first floor and sixteen feet on the second floor, in order to block Pope's view. And so this house will for evermore be known as the Spite House.
