Site Description
Mastin House, ca. 1823

Here is the Mastin House, enclosed by a cast iron fence with a fleur de lis pattern. This house was built for Captain and Mrs. Frank Mastin.
Mastin served as an aide to General Andrew Jackson during the Creek Indian War. As the Militia raced from Tennessee through Huntsville to the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, Mastin and many other men were impressed with what they saw here, even in 1813. Several of them returned to settle permanently.
The original house was built in 1823 and the Italianate features were added in 1850.
Perhaps the Mastins, like many parents, were unable to keep up with or know about the conduct of their growing children. The separate two story building to the right was built to accommodate the Mastin's four sons.
