Walker was the grandson of pioneer LeRoy Pope and son of John Williams Walker, one of Alabama's first senators. Leroy Pope Walker was one of Huntsville's most famous residents. Walker survived the war and went on to defend outlaw Frank James during his trial for robbing the Federal payroll near Florence, Alabama. He won an acquittal for Frank James and died shortly thereafter of peritonitis.
