Site Description
Patton House, ca. 1867

On the immediate right is a fine brick house from 1867, the Patton House.
During the Civil War, Mary Jane Gooch lived on that site in a modest cottage. When the Rebels threatened the city, Widow Gooch's house was destroyed to make way for a fort. Actually the whole hill from here to the left was fortified.
Neighbors came here that evening with their shovels and containers to carry away her flowers to their yards. You might see offspring of Mrs. Gooch's garden anywhere in town today.
