Site Description
McClung House, ca. 1838

This home was built by Colonel James White Mc Clung for whom this street is named. He was an attorney, legislator, senator and candidate for Governor.
He got into an argument with Andrew Wills, Editor of the Huntsville Democrat, and they agreed to settle their argument in the gentlemanly manner, in a duel on the Courthouse Square. But attorneys are apparently better marksmen than newspaper editors and Andrew Wills was shot dead. Because dueling was an acceptable way to settle differences in the early 1800s, McClung was not indicted.
This home also has two carved mantels from the home of John Jacob Astor, the American millionaire who died when the Titanic sank on the night of April 14th & 15th, 1912. Astor was on an extended honeymoon with his young wife, who was saved when she escaped from the sinking ship on a life raft.
