Site Description

Notice that none of the houses on this lane are old. They are just made to look aged to fit the setting.
Although the antebellum homes in the Twickenham District appear to be built somewhat close together, most of the acreage was in back of the homes. It was there that the family cow was kept in a barn and the smokehouses, carriage houses and slave quarters were built there as well.
As we go down Cruse Alley, you will notice the homes are much newer. These home have taken the long yards that were once part of the older homes. Few of these homes are still in the families of the original owners.
Although plantation owners were financially devastated by the Civil War and the end of slavery, most of the residents of downtown were lawyers, merchants and doctors, and their livelihoods did not rely on slave labor.
