Site Description
Van Valkenburg House, ca. 1902

This 1902 Classic Revival home was built by a former Union soldier who liked Huntsville and came back to settle after the war. This beautiful home has curved windows in front, and on the side facing Williams Street is a stained glass window depicting the scene from Greek mythology, the story of Hero and Leander.
The entire scene is on a classical Greek balcony overlooking the Hellespont with Abydos in the background, Hero plucks a heart for Leander, who swims the Hellespont nightly to be by her side. This artistic interpretation is a virtual copy of earlier works by Louis Comfort Tiffany, dating from the late 1880s. The window's design and fabrication is attributed to Healy and Millet of Chicago.
